Maria Chapdelaine

Maria Chapdelaine is the title of first released in 1914 in a newspaper and published as a book in 1916 novel by Louis Hémon ( 1880-1913 ). Only after the death of the author, the book became an international success, translated into many languages ​​and filmed several times.

Content

Maria, the protagonist of the novel, grew up in the very rural and secluded environment Peribonkas in Québec ( Canada). The novel depicts the hard life of privation settlers who constantly work your way in the wilderness and make the soil fertile. Mary, the eldest daughter of such a settler family, is of marriageable age and must choose between three " suitors " that anyone could be of interest to them and their lives in his own way.
