Maria Firmina dos Reis

Maria Firmina dos Reis (* October 11, 1825 in São Luís, † 1917 in Guimarães, Maranhão ) was a Brazilian writer. She was one next to Teresa Margarida da Silva e Orta of the first Brazilian writers, and is considered the first representative of the South African negritude.

Life

Maria Firmina dos Reis was born the illegitimate daughter of João Pedro Esteves and Leonor Felipe dos Reis; why and when her mulatto was the access to public education difficult. She learned a lot with a maternal aunt, and the writer and grammarian Sotero dos Reis ( a cousin of her mother ). At twenty-two she won a public tender for a job as a primary school teacher in the town of Guimarães ( Maranhão ).

With their debut Úrsula, published in 1859 under the pseudonym Uma Maranhense ( " A maranhensische woman " ), it represents an abolitionist position about the fate of the slave Ursula. 1887 followed thematically complement the narrative A Escrava ( " The slave " ) with the figure of Isaura. In 1871 she published a book of poetry Cantos à Beira-Mar. She wrote for literary magazines, including Verdadeira Marmota, Semanario Maranhense, O Domingo, O País, Pacotilha and Federal Paulista. In 1880 she opened the first woman in the state of Maranhão, a mixed girls and boys' school, which then created a scandal.

My pseudonym was only in 1975 on the occasion of the facsimile edition of " Ursula ", edited by Horácio de Almeida, uncovered. Today's reception she owes the interest in the older Latin American women's literature.

Effect

According to her, a cultural week was named in her native city of São Luís do Maranhão, 2010, the fourth Semana Cultural Firmina Maria dos Reis.
