Maria Holaus

Maria Holaus ( born December 19, 1983 in Brixen im Thale ) is a former Austrian alpine skier, who specialized in the speed disciplines of Downhill and Super -G. In her repeatedly interrupted by serious injury career she achieved a win and two podium finishes in the World Cup.

Career

Holaus began as a six- year-old ski club in their hometown Brixen with regular training and later attended the Skihandelsschule in Stams. As a member of the Tyrolean State squad took after reaching the age limit from the 1998/1999 season in FIS races in part. In 2000, she was included in the squad of the Austrian Ski Federation. After the turn of the year 2000/2001 Holaus denied their first European Cup races where she went straight into the top 10. A little later the first victory came in a FIS race and the beginning of February to participate in the Junior World Championship 2001 in Verbier, in which they behind teammate Astrid Four Thaler won the silver medal in the downhill. In the same month, she was in her age group Youth II Austrian Youth Champion in Giant Slalom.

In January 2002, Holaus celebrated their first European Cup victory in two runs in Altenmarkt, before a series of serious injuries followed. A few days after the European Cup victories Holaus suffered her first ACL tear, which she had to end the season prematurely. At the beginning of the next winter they were in two European Cup races in Ål her comeback, but in the second of these two giant slaloms she injured her knee again, so they had to miss the entire 2002/2003 season. After a year's break from racing Holaus took in December 2003 at two FIS races in Kühtai part, but again she had to after an injury the season already quit at the beginning again. Another breach in late autumn 2004, she also continued throughout the 2004/2005 season out of action.

After only four races in the last three and a half years Holaus remained in the season 2005/2006 for the first time injury free. She won at the end of winter, two FIS races, celebrated a little later in the departure of Altenmarkt their third European Cup victory and finished the season with a downhill victory at the Austrian Championships, again in Altenmarkt, from. After another victory in the European Cup the now 23- year-old came on 13 January 2007 in the departure of Altenmarkt to her World Cup debut. Two weeks later, she reached behind Tina Maze in second place in the downhill in St. Moritz, before she was again thrown back by injuries. During a fall in the World Cup Super -G in Sestriere 10 February 2008 Holaus suffered a partial tear of the sideband and a fraction of the tibial head, and she had to finish the season. In the next World Cup Winter 2008/2009 she was operated on both knees after only four contested races because of severe pain. Thus, they could not participate in the 2009 World Championships in Val d' Isère.

Her comeback in the 2009/2010 season began Holaus - like last winter - with a fifth place in the departure of Lake Louise. Barely a month later, on January 8, 2010, she fell upon retraction for the World Cup downhill in Haus in the Enns Valley and slid against a snow gun, which she suffered a broken right lateral malleolus and ankle injuries. As a result, she fell again for the remainder of the season and also for the 2010 Winter Olympics. During her injury Holaus passed the vocational matriculation examination and then began training as a midwife. On 14 July 2010, she announced her retirement from professional racing. She is romantically involved with former ski racer Josef shield.
