Maria Kliegel

Maria Kliegel ( born November 14, 1952 in Dillenburg ) is a German cellist.

It was first known when she makes music won the National Youth Competition Youth twice. After leaving school in her hometown, she studied with Janos Starker at Indiana University in Bloomington, USA. Mstislav Rostropovich described it as "the best cellist I have heard since Jacqueline du Pré ", others as "La Cellissima ". She has won many international music awards (among American high school competition in Chicago, German Music Competition in Bonn, Aldo Parisot - Competition in Brazil, Concours Rostopovich in Paris) and has occurred in all parts of the world. Her extensive repertoire is recorded on LP and CD. Above all, she has made herself earned through relentless commitment to contemporary music, including first performances and CD recordings of works by, for example, Alfred Schnittke and Sofia Gubaidulina and the Hommage a Nelson Mandela by Wilhelm Kaiser- Lindemann, as well as for the musical education and as a jury member in many competitions. In the sale of her CDs she lies on top of the world - their discography ( Naxos) is regarded as exemplary.

Since 1986 Maria Kliegel leads a master class at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. She plays the Stradivarius cello ex Gendron from 1693 that was over 30 years in the possession of the French cellist Maurice Gendron.

In 2001, Maria Kliegel the Xyrion Trio and plays regularly since then in this lineup.

Maria Kliegel is sister of operating in Chile German priest Peter Kliegel.
