Maria Ley-Piscator

Maria Ley ( born August 1, 1898 in Vienna as Friederike Flora Czada, † October 14, 1999 in New York City ) was a dancer, choreographer, director and teacher for dance.

Life

Maria Ley was born the daughter of the Hungarian- Vienna city architect Edmund of Czada (1861-1920) and the Czech pianist Frederike Brunswick de Corrompa (born Schuldes, 1876-1916 ) from soil Bach to the world. Maria Ley received in Vienna trained as a dancer in the style of Fanny Elssler. In the 1920s she appeared in Vienna, Paris, on the Côte d' Azur, in Berlin and in the United States. Between 1924 and 1929 she worked with Max Reinhardt. She received her PhD in 1934 at the Sorbonne in Paris and was the author of poems, novels and plays.

Ley was married three times, his first wife in the early 1920s with a native of the Czech Republic Austrian officer Robert Bauer, in a second marriage from April 1928 Frank Gerhard German ( 1899-1934 ), the son of industrialist and co-founder of AEG Felix German and the Lilly Kahn from Berlin. Her third marriage, she was launched in April 1937 in Neuilly -sur -Seine with German director and representatives of political theater Erwin Piscator ( 1893-1966 ) a.

After emigrating to the United States for the year 1938/39, she was a professor at New York's New School for Social Research. With Erwin Piscator she founded in 1940 at the New School Dramatic Workshop to; Students have included Harry Belafonte, Tony Curtis, Marlon Brando, Tony Randall and Walter Matthau. After Piscator's departure from the United States in 1951, she took over temporarily the management of the workshop and was still in old age as a guest lecturer at several U.S. universities operate.

For personal and professional reasons, she followed her husband in the 1950s, not to Germany, but remained throughout his life closely associated with him and visited him regularly. In memory of Erwin Piscator she founded in 1986 the " Piscator Award".
