Mária Mednyánszky

Mária Mednyánszky [ ma ː ː nski riɒ mɛdɲa ] (* 1901, † December 22, 1979 in Budapest) was a Hungarian table tennis player.

Life

Mednyánszky 1926 was the first World Table Tennis Champion. She came from a rich family; This enabled her to participate in the World Cup. In the following four world championships defended every time the title. Overall, she won ten world championships 28 medals, including 18 gold medals.

The first world title she almost missed out on a curious way. She was misinformed about the beginning of their first round matches. So she went with a friend a football game actually came too late to the match, but the organizers allowed her to make up for the match. After that she won all the games and won the world title.

For her sporting achievements presented her with the President of the Hungarian Table Tennis Association György Lakatos 1976, the highest award at the time of the Hungarian state, the Sports Merit Medal of the Hungarian People's Republic in gold.

Mária Mednyánszky was married to the bank employees Jenő Klucsik who played as well as in the MTK (Magyar Testgyakorlók Köre ). Her son Laszlo Kluksic wrote in a book about Hungary Mária Mednyánszky.
