Maria of Bulgaria, Latin Empress

Maria Asena ( bulg: Мария; † after 1216 ) was a Bulgarian princess of the house Asen and an empress of the Latin Constantine Opel as the second wife of the Emperor Henry.

She was a daughter of the Tsar of the Bulgarians Kaloyan ( Johannitzes ), who died in 1207 in the battle against the Latins, who had settled in the Byzantine room after the conquest of Constantinople Opel ( Fourth Crusade ). The throne of the Bulgarians was usurped it from his nephew Boril who sought peace with the Latins for the purpose of his reign consolidation. So Mary was married by him in 1212 with the Latin Emperor Henry.

Emperor Henry died in 1216. Contemporary chroniclers suspected behind his death a murder by poisoning and suspected inter alia, Maria fact. About it is handed down from that time nothing more.
