History

By 1857 here the glacis, the field of fire in front of the city wall was located. The Ringstrasse was built and opened in 1858 to 1865. The aim was to build the grand boulevard of the monarchy, which demonstrated the importance of the Empire of Austria or Austria -Hungary and his dynasty, the House of Habsburg -Lorraine.

For the area immediately in front of the imperial residence, the Hofburg Palace, the plan was the establishment of an Imperial Forum, formed from what is now Heroes Square and today Maria Theresa Square. These two new wings of the palace should be erected in front of the historic Hofburg between people garden and castle garden. Beyond the Ring Road, the two imperial museums should connect to these tracts. On the ring road bends had the wings of the Hofburg connected to the two imperial museums.

The most ambitious project could only be realized in part. The present entrance to the National Library in the New Castle opposite wing was not built after the new castle was completed as the first of two planned new wings until 1913. Very well, but today Maria Theresa Square forming structures were created:

At the Maria Theresa square in the center includes more distant part of the museum space as part of the two- line, behind the historic main facade of the Museum Quarter, the Maria Theresa Square visually closes. This historical component was built in 1725 as an imperial stables. In the 20th century reversed, as on the ring road until today, even on the two- line electric trams until the track was 1965/1966 moved into a tunnel under the main road; wrong in this since 1980, the U -Bahn line U2.

The reasons of preservation very delicate project was not yet ready for decision.
