Mariac

Mariac is a commune of Ardeche in the Rhone -Alpes. Administratively, it is assigned to the District of Le Cheylard and the arrondissement of Tournon -sur -Rhône.

Geography

The mountain village with 644 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is located in the mountain range Les Boutières, an eastern edge of the Massif Central. 43% of the municipal area is forested. The town is crossed from west to east of the stream spines. A stone bridge connects the village with the hamlet of Pont -de- Fromentières on the other side of the spikes. With Trapayac, Chadenac, Ribefaite, Seynac, Girond and Cornuscle include six other hamlets to the municipality. The center of the mandrels is to just 500 meters above the sea; the highest point in the district Cornuscle to over 1000 meters.

History

Originally stood Mariac one parish. But in 1853 it was with Mariac (613 hectares) and Pont -de- Fromentières ( 876 acres ) split into two areas. 1873 one even considered the division of the town into two independent communities, but this project failed. One of the main causes of the former dispute was the fact that the French Occitan displaced more and more.

Demographics

The place was one in 1800 about 1,000 inhabitants and inhabitants. By 1313 it reached 1861, the largest population.

Economy

Mariac was traditionally a farming village, with livestock (cattle and sheep ) dominated. Thanks to the mandrels and the hydropower created locally tanneries, sawing and milling. Later these plants were replaced by silk mills. Glass wool produced - Today is - building on that tradition. Marius Chomarat founded in Le Cheylard and Mariac the company Groupe Chomarat, which produces special textiles and plastics, and glass fibers. It is now the main employer in the area. In addition Mariac there are around a dozen nurseries and apiaries. For the local market also poultry is reared and sheep and wool produced.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque-Gothic church Église Saint- Étienne was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to St. Stephen. The church was reconstructed in 1962. The bell tower and the Calvary are under monument protection.
  • The Church of Pont -de- Fromentières was built in 1853 and sparked a small bell tower ( Clocheton ), each of which ushered in the exhibition, from 1770 on. The old building which lies on the left bank of the spikes has been preserved.
  • The homestead Ferme de Garnier located at the entrance of the village. It can be accessed through an idyllic stone bridge dating from the mid-18th century. A tradition says that once connected a tunnel the yard with the former hunting lodge on the other side of the spikes.
  • The old bread oven of Girond is the occasion of festivities still in use. His restoration successes in 1971 at the behest of Father Michael.
  • The boardwalk Pont -de- Fromentières was built in 2005. It is 25 meters long and connects the sports field with the old town hall.
