On 1 January 2007 the municipality Mariagerfjord has arisen in the course of municipal reform as a new Danish municipality on Mariagerfjord. It consists of the former municipalities Arden, Ebeltoft, Hobro and Mariager.
Mariagerfjord has a total population of 42,111 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013 ) and an area of 718.30 km ². It is part of Region Nordjylland, the seat of government is located in Hobro.
