Geography

Mariahof lies in the Mur Valley at Neumarkt saddle, a mountain pass that connects the Mur valley with the Metnitztal. The community consists of 17 districts: Forest, Baierdorf, Schachen, Russdorf, train station, Adendorf, Vockenberg, Neudorf, Steinberg, Hoferdorf, Oberdorf, Diemer village, whether the Church, Mountain, Stadlob, Klachel and Lambach.

History

The parish church was first mentioned in 1066 as " ecclesia Grazluppa " documentary. In 1103 she became the Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht slammed. The newly built in the 14th century church was rebuilt after being destroyed by the Hungarians 1482-1511 in late Gothic style and remodeled to the weir.

The local church 1849/50 incorporated and existing from the cadastral Adendorf and Baierdorf was originally Adendorf and was renamed in 1881 in Mariahof.

Population

The municipality had 2001 1.327 inhabitants according to the census. The population has remained virtually unchanged since 1951 ( 1,391 ). 99.1 % of the population possess Austrian citizenship. For the Roman Catholic Church to 94.4 % of the population profess, 3.7 % have no religious confession.

Culture and sights

  • Ruin stone castle: the former fortress was built around 1131 and is located at an altitude of 1180 meters, so it is considered as highest castle in Styria.

  • Furtnerteich: The resultant of glacial pond is now embedded in a 13 -acre nature reserve. He is best known Blasius hemp, a Father of the Benedtiktinerstifts St. Lambrecht, who was in the 19th century as one of the leading ornithologists of Austria.
  • Vivarium: The Vivarium is the Natural Park Information Centre of Mariahof. In addition to the native plants and wildlife and flora and fauna of the Amazon region are presented. After financial difficulties and utilization the vivarium is closed since 3 October 2011. The reopening was planned after realignment for June 2012, a date for the reopening is currently not known (as of September 2012).
  • Dürnberger Moor: The Moor Dürnberger is around 12,000 year old sandals and high moor. It is approximately 16 acres in size and mainly with the peat moss Sphagnum species Magellan (Sphagnum magellanicum ) and Ruddy peat moss (Sphagnum rubellum ) covered. Among the plants occurring here include the digestion disc wool grass, bog rosemary, cranberry, bog bilberry and heather. Among the species occurring here is one of the black grouse.

Economy and infrastructure

Mariahof is a Sommertourismusort with about 30-35000 nights. In manufacturing, wood processing plays the biggest role, furthermore, there is a gravel pit.

The community has with the breakpoint (formerly Station ) Mariahof - Sankt Lambrecht a station on the railway Rudolf. From there also conducted from 1945 to 1951 the trolleybus Sankt Lambrecht for dynamite factory of Dynamit Nobel.

Policy

The council consists of 15 members and has been working for the municipal elections in 2010, mandates the following parties together:

The ÖVP is with Peter present the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor with Florian Plank.

Coat of arms

The award of the municipality coat of arms was made on 10 September 1930. Coat Description: A four divided by a golden thread cross shield. In the right upper blue field is a ruined castle rises from white masonry on a green hill. The ruins introduces coming from the left Untereck steep uphill path. In the upper left also blue field stands on green grass ground a yellow-brown colored cow. In the lower right green field a rotgekrönter and sword in silver panther comes out from the jaws of flame appears. In the lower left green field also rises on a bright green ground built of white walls and red -considered building. The shield surrounds an ornamental bronze-colored edging.
