Marian Harkin

Marian Harkin ( * November 26, 1953 in Sligo) is an Irish politician and since 2004 a member of the European Parliament.

Harkin studied mathematics at University College Dublin in 1976 and received her Bachelor of Science degree. A year later, she received her Higher Diploma in Education. After completing her studies, Harkin worked from 1977 to 2002 as a mathematics teacher. In 1999, she ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the European Parliament. In 2002 she was elected as an independent candidate in the 29th Dáil Éireann. 2004 saw her elected to the European Parliament. In the elections to the 30th Dáil Éireann they renounced in 2007 for reelection in order to fully focus on their mandate as MEPs. In the European Parliament it belongs to the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and sits on the board. She also belongs to the European Democratic Party.

As a Member of the European Parliament she is a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Delegation for relations with the United States. Furthermore, it has been deputy to the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, the Committee on Petitions and the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand.

Family

Harkin lived until 1996, when her husband died, and her family in Manorhamilton. Her husband had owned a grocery store there. After her husband's death, she moved with her ​​two sons to Sligo, where she lives currently.
