Marianne Island

Marianne (English Marianne Iceland, French Île Marianne ) is the second easternmost of granite according to Fregate Island in the Seychelles.

Geography

Marianne is located 3.5 km south east of Félicité and about 50 km north east of Mahé, the main island of the Seychelles. The island is the center of Pointe aux Joncs in the north about two miles long to Pointe Grand Glacis in the south. With a maximum width of 800 meters, it has an area of ​​0.963 km ² ( 96.3 ha) and reaches a height of Estel Hill 130 meters above the sea.

History

In the Marion Dufresne expedition in 1768, only a small forest cover of the island was found.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the island was privately owned, although lack of water hampered the development. In the 1830s, maize was grown in greater quantities, and in the early 20th century, a coconut plantation for copra production has been created, which existed until the 1970s. At the time the island had about 50 to 60 residents who lived on the west side in La Cour.

Today the island is uninhabited, but is visited regularly by tourists and fishermen.

Wildlife ( fauna)

Marianne On the rare Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher ( Terpsiphone corvina ) occurs, as well as the island was home to the latter day extinct Seychelles yolk chest glasses bird ( Zosterops mayottensis semiflava ). Some gecko species occur, including Phelsuma sundbergi ladiguensis and Phelsuma astriata semicarinata.
