Mariano Haro

Mariano Haro ( Haro Mariano Cisneros, born May 27, 1940 in Valladolid ) is a retired Spanish long-haul and hurdler.

Five times he was national champion in the 5000 m (1962, 1964, 1965, 1969, 1970), nine times in the 10,000 m (1962, 1964, 1965, 1969-1971, 1973-1975 ), eleven times in cross country (1962, 1963, 1968, 1969, 1971-1977 ) and once each over 3,000 m steeplechase (1967) and in the 30 - km road race (1975).

In 1963 he won bronze at the Nations Cross. About 3000 m steeplechase he won bronze at the Mediterranean Games in 1967. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he was disqualified in this discipline in the flow.

In 1971, he was fifth in the 10,000 m at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki and won the silver medal at the Mediterranean Games in the 10,000 m. Also, he won silver in the following year, as the Cross of Nations was held for the last time. At the Olympic Games in Munich, he was fourth.

In 1973 he was at the World Cross Country Championships in Waregem second behind the Finn Pekka Päivärinta - beaten only by a tenth of a second. At the end of the year he won the second time after 1966, the San Silvestre Vallecana.

In 1974 he won at the Cross Country World Cup in Monza, again silver. This time he was just under a second behind Erik De Beck to the finish. At the European Championships in Rome, he was eighth in the 10,000 m.

Another silver medal he won at the Cross Country World Cup 1975 in Rabat, where he also parted just a second winner from Ian Stewart. In his third Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, he was sixth in the 10,000 m.

Mariano Haro is 1,70 m tall and weighed to its active time 60 kg. He grew up in Becerril de Campos ( Palencia ) and therefore was also called El leon de Becerril ( " the Lion of Becerril ").
