Mariano Jesús Cuenco

Mariano Jesús Cuenco Diosomito Lopez ( born January 16, 1888 in Carmen, Cebu, † February 25, 1964 ) was a Filipino politician and writer.

Biography

After school he studied at the Colegio de San Carlos in Cebu and graduated in 1904 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) from. He then studied law at the Escuela de Derecho, the later Manila Law School, and completed his studies there in 1911 and passed the examination as a lawyer in 1913.

His political career began in 1912 with the election of the member of the Assembly of the Philippines ( Philippine Assembly), in which he and 1928 represented the interests of the 5th district of Cebu after several re- elections. In 1931 he was elected governor of the province of Cebu and was also for some time president of the League of provincial governors. In 1934 he was elected a member of the Constitutional Convention ( Constitutional Convention ), in which he Group Chairman (Floor Leader) was at the same time.

After the creation of the Commonwealth of the Philippines in 1935, he was appointed by President Manuel Quezon from 1936 to 1939 as Minister of Public Works and Communications in the Cabinet. In 1938, he was also for some time also Acting Minister of Agriculture, Trade and Labor.

In 1942 he was first elected to the Senate in 1946 and re-elected for a six -year term. In February 1949 he was President of the Senate, and held this office until March 1952. He was also Chairman of the Nomination Committee (Commission on Appointments ). In these roles, he ebenete the way for numerous reforms and his visible contributions led to a more effective functioning of the legislative body.

In November 1953 he was again elected Senator and served in this office for a further re-election in 1959 until the year 1965. From 1957 to 1959 he was chairman of the influential Committee on public accountability, the so-called Blue Ribbon Committee, which deals with the investigation of bribery and corruption in the government is concerned.

Cuenco was also known as a writer and publisher of the first Spanish -speaking and appearing in Cebu newspaper El precursor. In 1926 he became a member of the Academia Filipina de la Real correspondiente Española de la Lengua and was honored alongside the Grand Cross of the Spanish Order of Isabela la Catolica also with the papal honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice north.

He also wrote books in Cebuano Ang Republikang Pilipinhon, Codigo and Roma.
