Maribo is a Danish town on Maribosee on the island of Lolland in the Region Sjælland. Maribo is the administrative seat of the Municipality of Lolland, which was formed after the municipal reform of 2007 from the existing municipalities Højreby, Holeby, Maribo, Nakskov, Ravnsborg, Rudbjerg and Rodby. The town has 5936 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013 ) on an area of 154 km ².

Directly on the lakeshore is the former monastery church, completed in 1470, which has now become a bishop's church of the Diocese of Lolland -Falster. Here Leonora Christina Ulfeldt spent the last 13 years of her life. Kaj Munk (1898-1944) the priest, writer and resistance fighter was, was born in Maribo.

About seven kilometers north of the city center is the harbor town band Holm. Maribo by band Holm operates a heritage railway in the summer months. To Maribo Kommune also included the islands Askø and Lilleø. They can be reached by ferry from tape Holm. Adjacent band Holm is the Safari Park Knuthenborg, with an area of almost 6 km ² of the largest safari park in Scandinavia.

Traffic

At Maribo over the E 47 motorway from Rødbyhavn leads to Copenhagen. The national road 9 leads from the highway towards the west to Tårs at Nakskov. From there a ferry to the neighboring island of Langeland.

On the rail network Maribo is connected via the private Lollandsbanen. This operates the route of Nakskov about Maribo Nykøbing on Falster. On a branch line to tape spar runs in the summer months, the Railway Museum Maribo - band beam.

Around Maribo has a relatively dense network of bus routes. This includes overland lines connecting Maribo, for example with Odense on Funen.

Runestone

The Sædingestein is a rune stone which was discovered in 1859 in Nebbelunde It is in Lolland- Falster Stiftsmuseum in Maribo.

Baltic meteorite

On January 17, 2009 exploded on the island of Lolland of the so-called Baltic meteorite. Fragments of the meteorite were later found near Maribo and therefore contribute officially the name of the place.

Others

From Maribo comes also the same type of cheese, a cheese with a dry, yellowish bark, rice-grain- sized holes and slightly acidic taste.
