History and Demographics

The name of the village probably derives from the domestic to the Philippines piney tree Agoho. This is maribuhok in the local dialect or called malabohok. In the first records of the early Jesuit historian Fr Francisco Colin the town first appears as Malabooch and later as Malabohoc. When finally it changed into Maribojoc, is not known. In the period before the Spanish colonization of the place Dungguan was called, which means as much as anchorage.

In 1767, Maribojoc was appointed to the parish, and on October 15, 1860 then to a township. In 1879, Maribojoc was a thriving community with 18,200 residents - more than today. Only in the recent past, the population approaches this value.

Attractions

To the west of the municipality of Maribojoc, in Barangay Punta Cruz, is the Fuerza Punta Cruz. Built in the year 1796 by the Spanish fortress served as a lookout point to look out for approaching marauding pirates earlier and defend accordingly. Today, the observation tower located directly on the coastline is a popular destination among tourists.
