Mariefred

Marie Fred is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Södermanland County and the historic province of Södermanland. It is located about an hour's drive south-west of Stockholm in the community Strängnäs.

The place got its name from the Carthusian monastery founded in 1493 Marie Fred, on whose foundations in the 17th century, the present village church was built.

Located on the Gripsholm bay of Mälaren, located in Marie Fred Gripsholm Castle, which houses the Swedish National Portrait Collection of about 2000 exhibits. In the cemetery of Marie Fred is the grave Kurt Tucholsky.

In the summer there are daily except Mondays ship to Stockholm, by the steamer S / S Marie Fred, which runs on the same route since 1903. The journey takes about 3 ½ hours, berths on the line are Ekensberg and Sandviken. The steamer is also taking trips to the " castle cake " Taxinge - Nasby.

Marie Fred is the starting point of Östra Södermanland Järnväg, a 600 mm narrow gauge railway. The railway is the oldest museum railway in Sweden.
