Marienfeld Abbey (Austria)

Kloster Marienfeld is an abbey of Cistercian nuns of the Congregation Mehrerauer in the cadastral Maria Rye village in the municipality Wullersdorf in Lower Austria.

History

The monastery of Marienfeld was founded by Hans Hermann Groër as a daughter house of the Cistercian Abbey of Maria Stern ( Gwiggen ) in Vorarlberg. The construction was started in 1974. The then Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Franz König consecrated the monastery on 14 November 1982. Prior to the monastery is the grave of the founder, who died in 2003 and later Cardinal Hans Hermann Groër.

Architecture

The building site, a 4 hectare area, in the open field slightly southwest of Maria Rye village situated Melk Abbey, available in 1979 and surrounded with a square windbreak of trees. The monastery was built in 1976-1982 by the architect Walter Hildebrand from Vienna. The monastery is ring-shaped with a circular courtyard and has two west and east wings. The eastern wing building is the monastery church.

Line

The founding prioress Benedicta Deninger stands the monastery since 2000 before as abbess.

Presence

The main source of income of the sisters is the parament workshop. In addition, the nuns in the guest services, the vegetables and fruit and the church laundry for some parishes around work.
