History

The village was founded in 1424 due to a Marienhafe Bremer arbitral award as Marie Hoff. The church is situated therein, but since the 13th century. She was originally known for the almost 80 -meter high box-shaped tower and its three naves. The mudflats " Ley Bay " and " Kuiper Sand" (before Marienhafe in the Ems estuary or in their transition to the North Sea located ) derive their name from the ancient three-aisled Marie oats United Church. Its tower and all three naves were on the north side with copper ( " Kuiper " = Frisian- Dutch for copper) and on the south side with slate ( " Ley " = altdeutsch for Slate ) covered, so that the Church from the sea by the changing views on the copper and slate page for insiders gave an indication of the remaining passable at low water tidal creeks and other areas of water. Without this special knowledge of the city and its port were tideabhängiger impregnable from the sea.

The importance of the church as a navigation mark went to the end of the Middle Ages back by shifting the shoreline. Marienhafe now lies inland and has no harbor. Both the tower and the vessels of the church were therefore drastically reduced in view of the high cost of maintaining the building in 1829. The Church of St. Jacobi ( Hamburg) ( without their today pointed spire ) conveys an impression about the original size of tower and nave of St. Mary oats church.

The Corsair Störtebeker here is also found in the late 14th century shelter. But he returned the favor in the battle of the chiefs of the Brookmerlandes for supremacy in East Frisia.
