Mariestad Cathedral

The Cathedral of Mariestad is one of the last Gothic churches in Sweden, which were built without historicizing or romantic intentions.

Architectural History

Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl. Since Mariestad two years later became the seat of the Superintendent about Värmland and Västergötland and an important center of the Reformation began in 1593 with the construction of a cathedral in traditional Gothic style. The cathedral consists only of a wide nave, as it seemed more appropriate for the preaching of the Reformation. Today's pulpit and the altar today were created after a fire in 1693.

Mariestad is indeed no longer a bishopric, but the church is still called a cathedral.

Equipment

The organ dates back to an instrument that had been built in 1860 by organ builder Per Larsson Åkerman. This instrument is still whistling material available, and will again be the magnificent organ case. 2011, the instrument was reorganized. It has 45 registers on three manual and pedal works. The Spieltrakturen are mechanically (main and Swell are equipped with Baker machines), the Registertrakturen are electric.
