Mariestad

Mariestad is a town in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and historic province of Västergötland. It is located about 180 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg on the European road 20 at the mouth of the river Tidan in Lake Vänern. Mariestad is also the capital of the municipality of the same name.

History

Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Charles, later King Charles IX. , At the mouth of the river Tidan in Vänern and named after his wife Anna Maria of the Palatinate. 1584 was Mariestad bishop's seat of a newly established diocese, in 1647 this bishop's seat was moved to Karlstad. 1660 was Mariestad residence city of the province of Skaraborg County, giving the city secured a stable development. End of the 19th century and in the 20th century was an industrial boom.

Economy

Today Mariestad is not longer residence because Skaraborgs County was received in 1998 along with two other provinces in the newly formed county of Västra Götaland County, but the city is still the administrative center and hosts a number of industrial companies in the field of household goods ( Electrolux ), paper and paperboard production furniture production.

Mariestad has a station on the railway line Gårdsjö - Håkantorp from where Gothenburg and Örebro are achievable.

Attractions

Mariestads most famous attraction is the cathedral. Castle Marie Holm was the residential palace and now houses several museums.
