Marietta is a city and the county seat of administration ( county seat ) of Washington County in the U.S. state of Ohio. In the census of the year 2000 14.515 inhabitants were counted. She was the oldest city's founding of the Northwest Territory (now the U.S. state of Ohio).

History

In 1788, a group of 48 men of the Ohio Company of Associates arrived at the confluence of the Muskingum River and Ohio River, and took there before the first city founding of the newly founded Nordwestteritoriums. The town was first called Adelphia and later renamed by the group led by General James Mitchell Varnum, in honor of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France " Marietta ". The name was changed in gratitude for French aid to support the young Republic in the struggle for independence from Britain.

Demography

The population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 14.0 % from 18 to 24, 25.1% 25-44 years, 22.3% from 45 to 64 years and 17.7 % of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.8 males.

The median income for a household (median) was $ 29 272, and the median income for a family $ 36,042. Males have a median income of $ 30,683, women $ 22,085. The per capita income was $ 18,021. Under the poverty line 13.6 % of families and 16.9 % of the population, including 24.6% under the age of 18 and 10.4 % aged 65 years or older lived.
