History

In the 19th century were built by European settlers in the fertile land along the Red River numerous farms and villages. 1887 built the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway (later the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway ) in present-day Marietta, which was still in Indian Territory at the time, a railway station. The actual city's history began on 2 June 1898, when the place was a separate municipality. The population of that time about 550 rose rapidly to 1546 in 1910 and 1977 inhabitants 1920. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the population fell to 1505, only after the Second World War, the population of Marietta went back up to the current state of 2445th

In the early years the railway was an important factor for the economic development of the city. The later built Interstate 35, however, had more negative effects on the economic life of Marietta, as the through traffic now ran past the city. A particularly severe blow in 2004 was the closure of two large companies, the Marietta Bakery and a work by Siemens Dematic with 400 and 64 employees. The most important employer for the people of Marietta is now the WinStar Casino of the Chickasaw tribe in neighboring Thackerville.
