Marignane

Marignane ( Occitan: Marinhan ) is a commune and industrial town with 34,393 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in Provence. It is located in the department of Bouches -du -Rhone, about 20 kilometers northwest of Marseille on the eastern shore of the lake Etang de Berre. The city area is 23.16 square kilometers.

In Marignane is Marseille Provence Airport. There is a connection to the Autoroute A55 and a railway station in neighboring Saint- Victoret on the route Marseille Arles. An attractions are: The tower of the old city gate, the Romanesque church of St. Nicolas and the Château des Covet, which was built in the Middle Ages and rebuilt in the 17th century.

For the culture of the place also heard that some of the old Occitan language is maintained, even if the majority of the population no longer understands and speaks only French. Marignane is dominated as much of the region from the political right. It was also known as one of four communities in Occitania, which were ruled by the National Front from 1995 to 2001. Sister cities are Wolfsburg ( Germany ), Figueres (Spain ), Göd (Hungary) and Slănic (Romania).
