Marija Bursać

Marija Bursać (Cyrillic: Марија Бурсаћ; born August 2, 1921 in Kamenica at Drvar, † September 22, 1943 at Vidovo Selo ) was a Yugoslav communist and partisan against the German occupation during the Second World War.

Life

Bursać joined in October 1941 the Communist Youth Federation ( SKOJ; Savez komunističke Omladine Jugoslavije ) and in February 1942 the Communist Party of Yugoslavia ( CPY; Komunistička partija Jugoslavije ) to.

Active in the United Federation of Anti-Fascist Youth of Yugoslavia ( USAOJ; Ujedinjeni savez antifašističke Omladine Jugoslavije ) and the Anti-Fascist Front of Women ( AFZ; Antifašistička front žena ) it served from July 1942 as political commissioner in the 3rd Company of the battalion of the working youth. As the 10th Krajina Brigade was set up in February 1943, she joined the 1st Battalion.

In an attack on German bunker in Kulen Vakuf Prkos on the night of 17 to 18 September 1943, she was so badly wounded that they had to be taken to forty kilometers distant hospital of the 5th partisans Corps. However, she died on September 22, still on the way near the village Vidovo Selo.

Honors

Bursać was the first woman, which was awarded on 15 October 1943, the title People's Hero of Yugoslavia by the High Command of the People's Liberation Army.
