Marilyn Horne

Marilyn Horne ( born January 16, 1934 in Bradford, Pennsylvania) is an American opera and concert singer in the vocal range of a mezzo-soprano.

Life

She studied with William Vennard at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and also participated in master classes with Lotte Lehmann. In 1954, she lent the film actress Dorothy Dandridge her singing voice in the sound film Carmen Jones. After first appearances in the U.S. Marilyn Horne went to Germany in 1957 and had a firm commitment to the Gelsenkirchen Opera. There she sang in the next three years as a member of the ensemble all the major soprano roles. With the role of Marie in Alban Berg's Wozzeck in 1960 it attracted more attention at the opening of the new building in May. She was then brought in as a replacement for a diseased singer to San Francisco and left Gelsenkirchen.

In 1961 she met Joan Sutherland at a joint appearance in Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda know. The two sang from now common in many productions and LP recordings.

From 1960 to 1979 she was married to the African- American conductor Henry Lewis. During her pregnancy in 1965 she had to cancel the role of Lucrezia Borgia at the American Opera Society in New York. The then unknown young Montserrat Caballe stepped in and became famous overnight.

After being held horn voice initially for a soprano, she discovered in the 1960s, their actual voting compartment of the coloratura mezzo. Supported by her husband Henry Lewis as well as by Joan Sutherland and her husband, the conductor and bel canto specialist Richard Bonynge, Horne sang henceforth coloratura parts in operas by Gioachino Rossini and George Frideric Handel, thus paving their actual career.

She has performed at all major opera houses around the world. Her extensive repertoire ranges from Belcanto to the music of the 20th century. To date, it is considered as one of the best interpreters of Rossini.

End of the 1970s she also appeared as a guest star on the Muppet Show. Your last public appearance was at her 66th birthday at Carnegie Hall.
