Marina City

Marina City is a residential and commercial complex, which occupies a full city block of the U.S. city of Chicago.

The respectively 179.2 meter high twin towers are called " corn cob " due to their appearance as two of the most famous buildings of Chicago.

Architecture

The architecturally striking part of the Marina City are two 61stöckige high residential towers, which are identical.

The lower 19 floors form a spiral parking garage with 896 parking spaces per building. Here spectacular chase and action scenes for cinema and TV films will gladly turned. In the 20th floor there is a laundry room with panoramic views. The 21 to 60 storey each make 450 apartments. On the 61st and the top floor has a panoramic view in all directions.

All floors are radially arranged around a central service core, the structural backbone. During the construction of the towers all projectiles were gradually built from the central core. The cylindrical shape of the towers reduces the wind pressure, but also brings energy loss and thermal bridges with them. They also stood in stark contrast to contemporary architecture, the preferred straight and right angled residential buildings.

Following the example of the two towers 1972 the Augsburg hotel tower was built, which is also mentioned in Augsburg " corn cob ".

History

The Marina City was established in 1959 as a city within a city (Micro City ) by architect Bertrand Goldberg planned and completed in 1964. While this project was the depopulation of city centers against mixed residential concepts. The complex actually includes an office tower, a theater and a jetty for the Chicago River, as well as parks and an ice rink.
