Mario Botta

Mario Botta ( born April 1, 1943 in Mendrisio, Ticino Canton ) is a Swiss architect and professor of architecture.

Life

As a 15 -year-old Botta began an apprenticeship as a draftsman at Tita Carloni in Lugano ( 1958-1961 ). Subsequently, he attended the " Liceo Artistico " in Milan. From 1964-1969 he studied architecture at the IUAV Istituto Universitario d' Architettura di Venezia, where he graduated with Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol 1969. In the same year he opened his own architectural office in Lugano. In his further education he had contact with the architect Carlo Scarpa legends, Le Corbusier, Louis I. Kahn and Luigi Snozzi, whose influence in many of his buildings is visible. Botta is also regarded as the main representative of known in the 1970s " Ticino School " and admirers of Romanesque architecture.

Mario Botta often works with massive building materials such as natural stone, brick or concrete. The rationalist style Bottas is composed of a strictly geometric, simple forms and components, such as light and shadow. This combination makes the often very massive building light and elegant look. Botta always uses the same architectural elements from an inexhaustible large range of shapes when designing his signature works.

Many of his works can be found in his home, the Ticino. Mario Botta is but operates worldwide and has far beyond the borders of Switzerland, many admirers.

Mario Botta was appointed in 1983 as Adjunct Professor of the Swiss Federal Institute in Lausanne (EPFL ) and honorary member of the Association of German Architects BDA. Botta had a major role in the founding of the Faculty of Architecture ( Accademia di Architettura ) of the University of Italian Switzerland, where he teaches with Aurelio Galfetti, Kenneth Frampton and Peter Zumthor since 1996. In 2011 he was appointed head of the Accademia di Architettura; he follows Valentin Bearth.
