Either of the Roman god of war Mars, or from the Latin mas, maris meaning " male "; mistakenly interpreted as a masculine form of the derived from the Hebrew name Maria.

Name day is January 19th. As the name Holy Marius is considered, the Bishop of Avenches and Lausanne. He was born around 530/531 in the diocese of Autun (Burgundy, eastern France ). He was 574, the third Bishop of Avenches, which is located northwest of Fribourg ( Switzerland ), and moved 590 the bishopric to Lausanne. Steeped in Roman culture, he saw in the Empire the universal monarchy forever. He was also active as a goldsmith and verfertigte Church devices. On December 31 594 he died in Lausanne and was buried there. Originally the hl. Thyrsius consecrated church was later named after him, confirmed his cult in 1605 by the Catholic Church.
