Mario Scelba

Mario Scelba (. ? Ital Ausspr / i ) ( born September 5, 1901 in Caltagirone, † 29 October 1991 in Rome) was Prime Minister of Italy of 10 February 1954 to 22 June 1955, and President of the European Parliament from 1969 to in 1971.

Training

Mario Scelba studied law in Rome. In 1921 he joined the Catholic PPI by Luigi Sturzo. He was there among other party secretary. After the party was banned in 1926, he worked as a lawyer.

Policy

Since the beginning of World War II Scelba was in contact with Alcide De Gasperi and Giovanni Gronchi in the exchange of views on the resettlement of an Italian People's Party. In June 1944 he was a member of the Christian Democrats, in 1945 elected to the National Council. Scelba was several times Interior Minister of the country, including 1947-1952, 1952-1953, 1954-1955 and again from 1960 until 1962. Between 1954 and 1955 he was Prime Minister of Italy. Later he became a senator.
