After the license revocation by the OFB and the associated decline in the Regional Center of the GAK he joined in June 2007 for SK Sturm Graz, where he could after one season to fight for a regular place ( after the departure of Sebastian Prödl to Werder Bremen).

On 26 April 2010 it was announced that Sonnleitner replaced with start of the season 2010/11 for SK Rapid Wien, having already more firmly stood the disposal of Sturm Graz.
