Mario Stanic (2007)

Mario Stanic ( born April 10, 1972 in Sarajevo, SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player.

Life and career

Association

The midfielder began his career at FK Željezničar Sarajevo 1988. Stanic was considered one of the greatest Yugoslav talents at that time. 1992, when the Bosnian war started, he moved to Dinamo Zagreb, where he played only one year. The first station outside of the former Yugoslavia was Sporting Gijon in Spain for a year. Then came another year at Benfica in Portugal, add two years at Club Brugge in Belgium, three years at AC Parma in Italy and four years at Chelsea in England. So Stanic played in seven different European countries.

His greatest successes at club level were a time of Croatian champion with Dinamo Zagreb in 1993, a time Belgian champion, Cup Winners' Cup and Super Cup winner with Club Bruges (all 1996), a time UEFA Cup winner (1999 ) with the AC Parma and once the Italian Cup and Super Cup with the club (both 1999).

In 2004, he ended his career due to persistent knee problems.

National

International played Mario Stanic in October 1991 twice for the Yugoslav national football team. For Croatia, he was ran 49 times, scoring seven goals. His debut for Croatia was Stanic on September 3, 1995 against Estonia. The midfielder took part in the European Football Championship in England in 1996 in part ( three inserts ) in the Football World Cup 1998 in France ( seven inserts), where Croatia took the bronze medal and in the Football World Cup 2002 in Japan and South Korea ( two inserts ).

Stanic also shot the very first goal of a Croatian team at a World Cup when he scored the 1-0 in the 3-1 win against Jamaica. The last game for his country made ​​the Croat on 30 April 2003 in a friendly against Sweden.
