Mario Tobino

Mario Tobino ( born January 16, 1910 in Viareggio, † 12 December 1991 in Agrigento ) was an Italian writer and psychiatrist.

Life

Tobino began his career as a psychiatrist in Ancona, Bologna and Gorizia. From 1940 to 1942 he was a soldier in Libya; the local impressions he utilized in the 1951 published Il deserto della Libia. After his return, he joined the resistance movement. After the war he was from 1948 to 1980 director of the psychiatric clinic in Magliano in Lucca.

Work

Tobinos work is marked strongly autobiographical, but it is also increasingly neorealist trains.

In 1976 he was awarded the Premio Viareggio, one of the most prestigious Italian literary prizes.
