Mario Vicini

Mario Vicini ( born February 21, 1913 in Martorana di Cesena, † December 6, 1995 ) was an Italian cyclist.

Mario Vincini was a versatile athlete; he ran beside cycling and athletics, football and hockey. In 1935, he became a professional cyclist. In 1938 he won the Giro di Toscana, and in 1939 the Giro del Lazio, the same year he was Italian champion in the road race.

Eight times Vicini started the Giro d'Italia. In 1938 he won a stage and wore during a day the Maglia Rosa, 1939, he was third. In 1940 he won two stages and finished fourth, seventh in 1947.

Twice drove Vicini, who was considered a climbing specialist, the Tour de France. In 1937 he reached first the Col d' Allos, came in second in the overall standings behind Roger Lapébie and second in the mountains classification. In 1938, he finished sixth.

After his retirement from cycling Vicini founded in 1952 in his hometown of Cesena a bicycle production, which still exists today and is family owned. In his honor the Memorial Mario Vicini is annually held in Cesena.
