Marion Cannon

Marion Cannon (* October 30, 1834 in Morgantown, Virginia; † August 27, 1920 in Ventura, California ) was an American politician. Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia Marion Cannon attended the common schools and then completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. In 1852 he moved to California, where he was for 21 years engaged in mining in Nevada County. From 1869 to 1871 he was employed in this district as registrar (Recorder). In 1874, he settled near Ventura, where he worked in agriculture. Later he became a member of the Farmers ' Alliance, a forerunner of the Populist Party. In 1890 and 1891 he was elected as president for California this alliance. In 1892 he represented this organization in the meantime referred to himself as the People's Party, on their national party. In the same year he represented the State of California to an industry conference in St. Louis.

In the congressional elections of 1892 Cannon was a candidate of the Populist Party in the sixth constituency of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeds William W. Bowers took on 4 March 1893 who moved into seventh district. Since he resigned in 1984 to another candidacy, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1895. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Cannon was active again in agriculture. Politically, he is no more have appeared. He died on August 27, 1920 near Ventura, where he was also buried.
