Marion County (Illinois)

The Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 39 437 inhabitants and a population density of 26.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Salem.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Illinois. It has an area of 1481 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. At the Marion County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Marion County was formed on January 24, 1823 from parts of Jefferson and Fayette County. It was named after Francis Marion, an officer of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War.

The first settlers were 1811 Samuel Young and his son, whose house had been in the great earthquake of November 16, 1811 completely destroyed in Missouri, in search of a new home.
