Marion County (Iowa)

The Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 33 309 inhabitants and a population density of 23.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Knoxville, named after Henry Knox, a general in the American Revolutionary War and the first U.S. Secretary of War.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Iowa, and is drained by the Des Moines River, which is dammed in the center of the county to Red Rock Lake. The Marion County is located about 70 miles from Missouri and has an area of 1,478 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers are water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Marion County in 1845 from parts of the former Washington County in what was then Iowa - formed territory. It was named after Francis Marion (1732-1795), a general in the American Revolutionary War.
