Marion County (Kentucky)

Marion County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lebanon.

Geography

The County is located almost centrally in Kentucky and has an area of 898 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County, Boyle County, Casey County, Taylor County, LaRue County and Nelson County.

History

Marion County was formed on January 25, 1834 from parts of Washington County. It was named after General Francis Marion. During the American Civil War, the County was the scene of three battles in 1861, 1862 and 1863.

According to the census of 2000, there were 18,212 people in Marion County. Of these, 1,151 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 6,613 households and 4,754 families.
