Marion County (South Carolina)
Marion County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Marion.
Geography
The County is located in northeastern South Carolina, is in the north about 15 miles from North Carolina away and has an area of 1280 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dillon County, Horry County, Georgetown County, Williamsburg County and Florence County.
History
Marion County was formed in 1800. It was named after Francis Marion, also known as the Swamp Fox, a brigadier general of the South Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 living in Marion County 35 466 people in 13,301 households and 9,510 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 41.69 percent White, 56.35 percent Black or African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.90 percent from other races groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,301 households, 32.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.3 percent were married couples living together, 23.6 percent were single mothers, 28.5 percent were non-families, 25.4 percent of all households and 9.7 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.16 persons.
27.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.7 percent between 18 to 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 26,526, and the median income for a family was $ 32,932. Males had a median income of $ 26,133, women $ 18,392. The per capita income was $ 13,878. 18.9 percent of families and 23.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
