Marion is a city ( with a status of "City" ) in Linn County in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Iowa. In 2010, the city had 34,768 inhabitants.

Marion is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Cedar Rapids.

Geography

Marion is located in the northeastern suburb area of Cedar Rapids, near the eastern shore of the Cedar River. The city is located at 42 ° 02'03 " north latitude and 91 ° 35'52 " west longitude and extending over 31 km ².

Neighboring towns are Cedar Rapids (10.2 km south west from the city center ), Hiawatha (8.4 miles west), Robins (8.5 km north-west ), Alburnett (14,2 km to the north ), Whittier (17,3 km northeast), Springville (13,5 km to the east ) and Bertram (14,9 km to the southeast ).

Traffic

A few kilometers west of the city runs parallel to the Cedar River to Interstate 380, which is the shortest route from Waterloo over Cedar Rapids to Iowa City.

History

The story of Marion began in 1839, as an administrative seat for the two years previously defined Linn County should be established and the territory of the present-day city was chosen for it. The city was planned created and named after Francis Marion (1732-1795), a general in the American Revolutionary War.

1844 the first court and administrative building was completed. In 1977 it was remodeled and added an administration building.

In November 1919, the county seat was moved to the rapidly growing neighboring city of Cedar Rapids.
