Maripasoula

Maripasoula is a commune with 9487 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Overseas Territory French Guiana in South America. With an area of ​​18,360 km ² ( about the same size as the whole of Saxony ) Maripasoula is the geographically largest municipality of France.

Geography

Numerous rivers traverse the municipality of Maripasoula, the most important is the Lawa, which opens later in the Maroni. Maripasoula bordered to the south by Brazil, on the west by Suriname, on the north by the municipalities Papaïchton and Saul and on the east by Camopi. The highest point is the Tabulaire (830 m) in the east of the municipality.

Population

With 4241 inhabitants ( 2004 estimate ) Maripasoula belongs to the medium-sized communities in French Guiana. Since the founding of the town in 1947, the population is increasing constantly. Especially in the 1980s and '90s and the population rose very steeply.
