Mariposa, California

Mariposa (formerly also Logtown ) is a small town ( Census-designated place ) and the administrative seat of Mariposa County, California, United States. In 2010 there were 2,173 inhabitants registered, according to 1,373 in 2000. The name comes from Spanish and means " butterfly ", which stems from the fact that the first immigrants Monarch butterflies have seen hibernate.

Location

Mariposa is located at an altitude of 594 meters in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

History

The city was founded as a mining labor camp. Originally, it was down river about 800 meters. After a flood of 1849/50 she was transferred as Logtown higher. Over time, the old name Mariposa prevailed again.
