Maritime Mobile Service Identity

The term number of the maritime mobile service (English Maritime Mobile Service Identity, therefore, also in German often abbreviated MMSI ) denotes a nine-digit future ten-digit, worldwide phone number of the maritime mobile service for the identification of a lake or coast station in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS ). In this case, each lake or coast station, which is equipped with at least a GMDSS -capable marine radio, marine radio for each a separate MMSI. With the help of MMSI, it is possible via Digital Selective Calling ( DSC) to perform a Seefunkgespräch with a particular lake or coast station.

For ship stations, coast stations and ship stations, different groups of MMSI used:

  • The ship station MMSI one consists of the three-digit MID ( Maritime Identification Digit ) that identifies the country of origin of the ship station, followed by six digits from 0 to 9, which characterize the ship station clearly. Germany has the two MIDs, so that a ship station MMSI a German is structured as follows 211 and 218: 211xxxxxx
  • The MMSI of a coast station consists of two zeros followed by the MID and four digits from 0 to 9, which characterize the coastal radio station clearly. Bremen Rescue Radio ( Reputation: Bremen Rescue), located in the Maritime Rescue ( MRCC ) in Bremen, for example, has the following MMSI: 002 111 240
  • The MMSI of a group of ship stations (eg, all ship stations of a shipping company ) is a zero followed by the MID and five digits from 0 to 9, which characterize the group clearly.
  • The MMSI of a group of coastal radio stations consists of two zeros followed by the MID and four digits from 0 to 9, which characterize the group of coastal radio stations clearly. This number can be used for calls to a specific group of coastal radio stations.

In marine radio, trendsetting design already allows the entry of ten-digit MMSI, the MMSI is entered in the first nine points and filled up the last digit to a zero.

In Germany MMSI being allocated by the Hamburg branch of the Federal Network Agency.
