Maritime New Zealand

Maritime New Zealand is the Maritime Authority of New Zealand. About the borders, the Authority in 2011 became known when she coordinated the rescue operation following the sinking of the Rena and organized the cleaning operations after the oil spill. Established in 1993, the seat of authority is Wellington.

History

The History of Maritime New Zealand begins with the establishment of a Marine Board in 1862, as part of the colonial administration of the British Empire.

In the 19th century it became a state agency. The authority existed until 1972, until it came up as a department in the Ministry of Transport. In 1993 a separate agency under the name Maritime Safety Authority was created and renamed Maritime New Zealand, 2005.

Responsibilities

Maritime New Zealand is an authority a number of tasks which are carried out in Germany by various institutions: the Maritime Security Centre and the Central Command ( coordination of rescue operations ), the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre ( MRCC ) of the GMRS, the Waterways and Shipping Offices of the Federal ( navaids ), the port authorities (ship inspections and environmental protection) and finally the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency in matters of ship safety.

The tasks include:

  • Expulsion of guidelines for maritime security.
  • Licensing of seafarers ( boaters, etc.)
  • Ship registration.
  • Security checking at the New Zealand ships and all ships that enter the country's ports ( inter alia inspections in accordance with MARPOL).
  • Accident investigation of marine casualties and keep statistics about it.
  • Training of seafarers in environmental issues and safety training.
  • Provision and operation of lighthouses and other aids to navigation and navaids on the coast.
  • Operation of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre ( MRCC ) New Zealand.
  • Operation of the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand.
  • Protection measures and plans in the event of an oil spill.
