Marius Oprea

Marius Oprea ( born 1964 in Targoviste ) is a Romanian historian, poet and writer.

Life

Oprea studied archeology and history at the University of Bucharest and received his doctorate with a thesis on the role of the Securitate 1948-1964 (Romanian Rolul şi Evolutia Securităţii, 1948-1964 ). 1987 Marius Oprea was for the first time by the Securitate, the former Romanian secret, imprisoned. The former student had refused to join the Communist Party of Romania and distributed manifestos against Ceauşescu.

In 1997 he spent some time in Berlin, where he learned how to deal with intelligence files in the Stasi Records Authority under Joachim Gauck. He works for the Romanian Institute for Modern History (Romanian Institutul Român de Istorie Recentă ( IRIR ) ). In 2006 he founded the Institute for the Evaluation of the Crimes of Communism in Romania (Romanian Institutul de investigare a Crimelor în România Comunismului ( IICCR ) ). After this institute that mainly the research on political killings devoted himself in Romania, was merged in late 2009 with the Institute for the Study of the Romanian Exile, the Nobel Prize winner Herta Müller began that Oprea continue to retain control of the Institute.

Oprea is a member of the Romanian Writers' Union (Romanian Uniunea Scriitorilor din România ).
