Mariusz Zaruski

Mariusz Zaruski ( born January 31, 1867 in Dumanow, † April 8, 1941 in Kherson) was a Polish general, yachtsman, mountaineer, writer, poet and painter.

Zaruski studied mathematics and physics in 1885 in Odessa. There he became acquainted with the sea, whose fascination accompanied him throughout his life. He painted seascapes, which opened him access to art school and hired during the holidays on ships to travel to Siberia, China, Japan, India, Egypt and Syria. Because of his involvement in a Polish anti-Russian organization, he was banished in 1894 to Arkhangelsk. There he was able to attend the Naval Academy, went on a merchant ship through the Arctic Ocean to Norway and finally was given command of a private ship.

After his return to Odessa in 1896 he married Izabela Kietlińska. In 1901 he went to Cracow, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts until 1906 painting. Due to the poor health of his wife in 1907 he went to Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains, where he soon turned to the mountain climbing. In the same year he ascended the Kozi Wierch, 1911 Kościelec. He proposed the creation of the Mountain Rescue Association of Tatra ( TOPR ) and devoted himself to the outbreak of the First World War, the tourist development of the Tatras and training of mountain guides.

During World War II he founded the Polish 11th Cavalry Regiment, whose commander he was. He has won several awards. He ended his military career in 1926 with the rank of brigadier general and adjutant of Polish President Stanisław Wojciechowski. In the following years he devoted himself to the promotion of sailing in Poland. He founded with Antoni Aleksandrowicz the Yacht Club Polski ( YKP ), whose president he was, prompted the creation of the League Morska i Rzeczna and was involved in the creation of a Polish- English-French- Russian Marine Dictionary.

1929 met Zaruski as a sailing instructor for the first time on a boy scout troop, and his life was closely associated with the Polish scouting movement. In 1935 he was given command of the Scout Sailboat harcerz ( Scouts ), which was later renamed Zawisza Czarny, and became the undisputed authority of the Polish sailing. In 1939 he was arrested by the NKVD and sent to a prison in Kherson, where he died in 1941 from cholera. 1997 an urn with soil from Zaruskis grave was buried in Zakopane, and Zaruski was posthumously awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

For literary estate Zaruskis include not only poems, among others the story collections Na bezdrożach tatrzańskich (1923 ) and Wsrod wichrów i fall (1935 ).
