Marjan

Marjan is a peninsula on the western side of the Split peninsula in Croatia. The peninsula is covered with a dense pine forest, which has been, however, only replanted between the late 19th and early 20th century. For the most part the Marjan is forested with Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis). The highest point of Marjan is called Telegrin (178 m i. J. ), there was there during the time of Napoleon, a telegraph station. Today the Marjan is a protected park with about 400 protected plants.

Origin of the name

The name Marjan is of Roman origin, ie " praedium " or " fundus marianum ". The first time the name is mentioned in the first half of the 8th century in the news by the Prior Peter. The zoological garden of the city of Split is situated on the mainland -facing side of Marjan.
