Marjorie Tallchief

Marjorie Tallchief ( born 1926 in Denver) was a ballerina of the Osage Indians. She is the younger sister of Maria Tallchief and was the first Indian woman who acted as " première danseuse étoile " at the Ballet de l' Opéra de Paris.

Origin

Her parents were Alexander Tall Chief and his wife Ruth ( née Porter), who were very wealthy because of the oil revenues of the Osage. Marjorie grew up in Oklahoma in Fairfax. They moved in 1933 to Los Angeles, where she took ballet lessons with her sister. You danced with Bronislava Nijinska and David Lichine.

Dance career

After her training, she was, among other things with the American Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo ( 1946-47 ), the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas ( 1948-55 ), Ruth Page 's Chicago Opera Ballet ( 1958-62 ) and the Harkness Ballet ( as Prima Ballerina, 1964-66 ). Are known appearances in Night Shadow (1950), Annabel Lee (1951 ) Landscapes ( 1954), Romeo and Juliet (1955), and Giselle (1957).

Honors

In 1991, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1997 and honored with her sister Maria Tallchief, Moscelyne Larkin, Rosella Hightower and Yvonne Chouteau, as Oklahoma Treasures at the Governor's Arts Awards. The bronze sculpture The Five Moons it also provides together constitute

She had two children with her husband George Skibine and lives in Boca Raton, Florida.
