Mark-Anthony Turnage

Mark-Anthony Turnage ( born June 10, 1960 in Corringham, Essex ) is a British composer.

Mark-Anthony Turnage is a successful representative of the contemporary music of our time. His works are characterized by his close ties to jazz in general and the music of Miles Davis in particular. With its mix of jazz and classical styles to Turnage blazes its own path between modernity and tradition, the gap between contemporary and authentic historical gaming practices into question. With its distinctive musical language he enriched contemporary music.

Life and work

Turnage studied at the Royal College of Music with Oliver Knussen and John Lambert. He trained at Gunther Schuller and Hans Werner Henze at Tanglewood continues. 1988 was the opera "Greek" as a commissioned work for the Munich Biennale. From 1989 to 1993 he was " Composer in Association " at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. Works

At the beginning of his work focuses mainly on large works "Three Screaming Popes ", " quay ", " momentum " and "Drowned Out". In these and the song cycle " Some Days " (1989) Turnage proves great expressive freedom and security. Its development reached its first climax with the Saxophone Concerto "Your Rockaby " (1992 ) and three years later, " Blood on the Floor ".

In the second half of the 1990s Turnage wrote mainly theatrical works. The main work was his second full-length opera "The Silver Tassie ", which was premiered in February 2000 with great success at the English National Opera.

Currently, the focus of his work is primarily on instrumental compositions. These are, particularly " A Quick Blast ", which was premiered by the BBCSO at the Cheltenham Festival in 2001, and the commissioned work "Bass Inventions ", which was premiered by jazz bassist Dave Holland in Amsterdam in May 2001. " Scorched " put the jazz fusion guitarist John Scofield and his style of play in the center of a work that was premiered with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt in 2002 and 2004 appeared as an album. Shortly after " Dark Crossing " with Oliver Knussen and the London Sinfonietta has been addressed.

The opera Anna Nicole on the life of fashion model Anna Nicole Smith was first performed in 2011 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. In the Theater Dortmund the German premiere in April and May 2013, the Director of the Opera chief Jens- Daniel Herzog and under the musical direction of the GMD Jac van Steen on the game board.
